US Declares American Detained in China as Wrongfully Detained

CHICAGO,  Illinois, August 21, 2026  — American scholar wrongly detained in China: State Department designates Min Zin as wrongfully held Following an extensive review of his case, Secretary of State Marco Rubio made the decision. The move elevates the ongoing effort to free Zin to a formal priority of U.S. diplomacy.

How He Was Detained

Zin was detained on June 3 in the western province of Yunnan, where he had gone for an academic conference. According to the State Department, he’d received an official invitation from the Chinese government itself to attend the event. Officials said Zin had been detained for still undefined charges for nearly 11 weeks.

Beijing’s foreign ministry accused Zin of espionage and harming national security. “U.S. citizen Min Zin has been in detention by Chinese state security services on unspecified charges since June 3,” a State Department official stated. During his detention, the official noted that Zin has been interrogated and placed in solitary confinement on multiple occasions.

Who Min Zin Is

Zin is the founder and executive director of the Institute for Strategy and Policy-Myanmar. It is a political and foreign policy think tank dealing with above all Myanmar but also with the neighbourhood. His research frequently centers around Chinese foreign policy regarding Southeast Asia.

Dylan Johnson, the State Department’s deputy assistant secretary for China and Taiwan policy, said in a statement: “We call on Beijing to free all U.S. citizens arbitrarily detained or exit banned in China” “We do continue to assess the security situation and obviously, protecting American citizens overseas is and has always been our highest priority,” Johnson said. For weeks ahead of Thursday’s announcement, rights groups had lobbied for the designation.

A Second American Case

Zin is the second American academic to be designated as wrongfully detained by China in recent months. The other is Dr. Youlin Chen, who was assigned this label earlier this year as well. “News like Thursday’s meant so much,” said Chen’s wife, Dr. Yufang Rong.

Rong said the designation means that freeing an American will move to a true priority of the administration. She said she hoped the same relief now reached Zin and his family. Neither case was officially solved at the time of Thursday’s announcement.

Timing and Diplomacy

The declaration comes just weeks before President Trump is due to host Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House. The timing of the announcement gains diplomatic currency by this visit, expected September 24. Ahead of the summit, rights advocates had urged the U.S. to raise Zin’s case directly.

China rejects claim wrongful detention is part of its justice system Beijing says that authorities deal with such cases in strict compliance with Chinese laws. A history of wrongful detention designations can be found on the State Department policy page.

Analysts say the timing is indicative of an attempt to elevate the case ahead of high-level discussions with Beijing. The designation does not assure release but formally moves the case to a higher level of U.S. diplomatic channels. Relatives and activists say they will keep seeking answers with Xi’s visit approaching.

Colleagues at Zin’s think tank appealed to international academic institutions to advocate for him. Wrongful detentions have become a recurring point of contention in U.S.-China relations, human rights groups say. A date for additional diplomatic talks regarding his case has not yet been established.
