CHICAGO, August 26, 2026– Two military refueling planes of the United States have been relocated earlier than scheduled from the Bezmer air base of Bulgaria due to certain operational necessities.
This relocation has been done about a month following the arrival of the aircraft in southeastern Bulgaria pursuant to a bilateral defense deal which caused certain political controversies for both countries.
Operational Shift and Training Mandate
The aircraft, which were named Boeing KC-135 Stratotankers, departed the multi-purpose base after completing several weeks of missions in the region. According to Bulgarian Minister of Defense, Dimitar Stoyanov, all the missions conducted by the tankers were just part of training exercises alongside allied forces, and there had been no security threats to Bulgaria’s territory.
The U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Air Force confirmed the transit, emphasizing that flights of U.S. military aircraft are frequent occurrences in order to maintain a posture of readiness within the region.
“U.S. military aircraft routinely transit and are hosted by Allied and partner nations, including in Bulgaria, in accordance with access, basing, and overflight agreements,” an Air Force spokesperson stated, expressing gratitude for Sofia’s sustained defense partnership.
Geopolitical Friction and Parliamentary Scrutiny
Tensions arose over the presence of the aerial tankers starting in late July. The National Assembly of Bulgaria passed the temporary assignment, approving the mission to run from July 24 until the end of September. Nevertheless, the deployment of aerial refueling aircraft at the location of Bezmer, which is about 150 miles away from the capital in a southeasterly direction, caused condemnation by the Iranian officials.
The Bulgarian defense authorities, however, rejected these accusations, assuring the citizens that the temporary visit was conducted in accordance with international defense protocols. Defense officials further explained that the decision-making was conducted in full coordination with their allies through mechanisms managed by the Bulgarian Ministry of Defence.
However, local demonstrations conducted close to the airbase had also created some security worries, although it was assured by military officials that all operations went off smoothly. As per the agreement, which had allowed the operations till the end of September, the relocation of the two KC-135 aircraft can be viewed as the result of shifting needs in the theaters of operation.
