CHICAGO, Aug. 11, 2026– Thousands of theater enthusiasts gathered at Millennium Park’s Jay Pritzker Pavilion on Monday evening as Broadway In Chicago hosted its highly anticipated annual Summer Concert. The free, 90-minute outdoor event, presented in partnership with the City of Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE), offered Chicagoans and visitors an exclusive showcase of current blockbuster productions and upcoming national touring shows.
At 6:15 p.m., the pavilion resounded with popular songs from the Broadway musicals as the performers of the top Broadway musicals and those preparing their Chicago debut performed on stage. It was an event that celebrated not only the flourishing of the theater scene of Chicago but also an event which gave people a hint as to what they could see in the coming season at theaters in the city.
In this year’s musical concert, various theatrical productions of the region have been featured through a selection of some of the best excerpts from productions that have won the Tony Award, favorite performers and regional debut productions. Some excerpts from Tony Award-winning productions such as The Outsiders, The Notebook and Disney’s The Lion King, along with other excerpts from Operation Mincemeat, Waitress, and Maybe Happy Ending were seen. Other favorites included in the list are The Sound of Music, Dirty Dancing: The Musical, The Who’s Tommy, The Bodyguard, Heathers and Kokandy Productions’ Jekyll & Hyde.
The diverse choices indicated Broadway In Chicago’s effort to present best-of-breed artists and repertoires in the city’s famous theaters, including the CIBC Theatre, Cadillac Palace Theatre, and James M. Nederlander Theatre.
Gates were open from 4:30 p.m. at security checkpoints on Randolph and Monroe Streets. Like previous years, a huge audience came for the event, filling both the lawn seating and pavilion bowl seating almost to full capacity before the performance started.
People had picnic baskets and blanket seats since people were allowed to bring outside foods and beverages according to Millennium Park policy. To cater to disabled persons, special American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters, accessible seating areas for wheelchairs, and mobility services were provided by Broadway In Chicago and Millennium Park organizers. As per theater’s union rule, there would be no stream or recording of the concert.
For Chicago theatergoers, the annual concert marks the official kickoff to the upcoming season. Alongside individual ticket releases, Broadway In Chicago subscription representatives were on-site to assist patrons with group sales and waiting list sign-ups for subscriber packages, which include upcoming engagements of The Who’s Tommy, The Bodyguard, and Heathers.
Presale codes were also offered for selected tours in the near future, granting the audience members access to book their seats before the general sale that will be opened later this fall. With an exciting lineup of performances featuring everything from revivals to the greatest Broadway shows and innovative creations, Broadway In Chicago’s Summer Concert of 2026 once again proved how alive the art of live theatre is in Chicago.
